Anna Seghers's late work Drei Frauen aus Haiti is part of her oeuvre dealing with the Caribbean and revolution. The author unwittingly succumbs to the constraints of European enlightenment discourses when she moves outside her usual sphere of the European working class. By applying Western revolutionary constructs to her Haitian women subjects, Seghers catches them in her rhetorical measures and thwarts their liberation.
