It was a burning day in May when I first flew over the forests of Guiana. I had come from Georgetown, on the coast, in a three-seater plane the size of a taxicab. Below me, as far as the eye could see in any direction, were trees so thick that it seemed we could have landed on them as easily as landing on an airstrip.
